Cohere in Advanced Talks for $2 Billion to $3 Billion Funding at $20 Billion Valuation
Artificial intelligence startup Cohere is in advanced talks to raise between $2 billion and $3 billion at a $20 billion valuation, according to The Globe and Mail, reported September 11, 2026.
Potential largest private Canadian startup deal
The report says the funding could close as soon as next week, though it is not finalized and the terms could change. If the round closes at the reported figures, it would be the largest on record by a private Canadian startup and would place Cohere among Canada’s most valuable tech companies.
Cohere confirms investor interest, cites Series E process
Cohere did not comment on speculation but confirmed it has seen strong inbound interest from investors as part of its Series E process. In an emailed statement, the company said the level of engagement reflects confidence in its strategy, product momentum, and global demand for sovereign AI, adding it will share full details once the process formally concludes.
Prior valuation milestones: $6.8 billion and $7 billion
Cohere was valued at $7 billion in September 2025 after raising $100 million as part of the second close of a funding round. In August 2025, the company was valued at $6.8 billion when it raised $500 million.
Scaling for secure, sovereign AI demand
When announcing the second close, Cohere said it was scaling operations across North America, Asia-Pacific (APAC), and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). The company said its AI models are built to support agentic business operations and are designed for businesses and governments handling sensitive data, with agents active in finance, healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunications, energy, and government sectors.
Cohere Chief Financial Officer Francois Chadwick said investor demand supported the company’s momentum in deploying secure and sovereign AI for enterprises, emphasizing control of data in customers’ hands.
Why it matters
A $20 billion valuation would reset Cohere’s position in Canada’s private tech market and signal continued investor appetite for sovereign AI, especially for organizations managing sensitive data.
