Chipotle opens first Asia restaurant in Seoul, using joint venture model
Chipotle opened its first Asia-region restaurant in Seoul’s Gangnam district in early September, drawing long lines and viral buzz on Korean social media. The location also marks Chipotle’s first international expansion through a joint venture.
Seoul launch brings joint venture structure
Chipotle’s partner for the South Korea expansion is Sangmidang Holdings. The joint venture, S&C Restaurants Holdings, is 51% owned by Big Bite Company, an affiliate of Sangmidang, with Chipotle holding the remaining 49%, according to the Korean partner.
Chipotle chief business development officer Nate Lawton said the partnership is “an important evolution of our global growth strategy.” He said Sangmidang provides local market knowledge, operating infrastructure, and experience scaling restaurant brands across Asia.
Built supply chain for global standards
Beyond the storefront, Chipotle and its local partner built a supply chain intended to meet Chipotle’s global food quality standards. Big Bite said it used suppliers and farms it had already vetted for quality and reliability, along with SPC’s sourcing and processing infrastructure, to set up local sourcing.
Korean demand supports international fast-casual
Interest in Mexican food in South Korea remains strong. Mintel data cited in the report found 42% of consumers had eaten Mexican food in the previous three months, while 37% had not recently but were interested.
Mintel associate principal Heng Hong Tan said South Korea and Singapore offer conditions that tend to favor international fast-casual brands, citing consumers who are well-travelled and receptive to international cuisines.
Next target: Singapore in 2027
Chipotle’s next Asia market is Singapore. The joint venture partner told CNBC it is targeting the first half of 2027 for a Singapore launch, though timing and location have not been finalized.
Lawton described Singapore as a natural next step due to its familiarity with global brands. Still, Tan pointed to higher rental, labor, and energy costs as pressures on restaurant profitability.
Why it matters
The Seoul opening is Chipotle’s test of a repeatable joint venture approach for Asia expansion, including local sourcing and operations designed to protect its core brand standards. The response in South Korea will shape how the company executes in its next committed market.
